Department concerned about wind farm

The Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht is concerned that a proposed wind farm development near Letterkenny could disturb a population of red grouse on the site.

Donegal County Council is seeking further information on an application to build a large wind farm outside Letterkenny.

The council has requested more information from the applicants on the application by GDNG Renewables Ltd to build 16 wind turbines at a height of 152 metres and with a rotor blade length of 50 metres at Killymasney and Drumenan, Newmills.

Two observations have been made on the application – one by Patricia Sharkey of Cloghercor, Doochary and on by Jim Doherty of Solomon’s Court, Letterkenny.

The department believes that the population of red grouse on the site “may be disturbed and damaged by the development”.

The department said in a letter to the council that the disturbances could be caused by the operation of the wind farm and construction traffic. It has requested the council attaches conditions requiring a grouse management plan for the site.
