Blade falls from windmill; facility shuts down

PORTAGE – A large portion of one of the blades on a windmill in the Allegheny Ridge Wind Farm blew off sometime over the weekend forcing the facility to shut down.

A spokesman for the farm’s owner Infigen Energy, based in Dallas, said this afternoon that the reason for the blade to fall has yet to be determined, but experts will be on the scene over the next few days to look for a cause.

All 40 of the turbines were shut down as a precautionary measure, spokesman David Smith said, but there is no indication any of the other blades malfunctioned.

There were no injuries as a result of the falling blade and there is no reason to believe any other part of the turbine, along Route 164, could be problem, Smith said.

The area has been secured, and Smith is asking people not to go near the site.
