Final approval given for County wind farm

A controversial wind farm near Lake Ontario in Prince Edward County has received approval from the provincial government.

Gilead Power has been given the green light to build a wind farm at Ostrander Point that could provide enough electricity to power over 5 thousand homes.

The province made the announcement today. The project involves 9 wind turbines.

Many residents in Prince Edward County vehemently opposed the project, especially because it is near an officially recognized bird migration and resting route.

Prince Edward MPP Todd Smith advises County residents who oppose this to make it known…

The province has imposed special conditions on Gilead Power in regards to protecting birds and bats.

One condition will force the company to maintain a 37 hectare natural area near their project for 20 years.
