New windfarm plan for Glenkens

Credit:  Dec 13 2012 by Stuart Gillespie, Galloway News | www.dgstandard.co.uk ~~

Another windfarm is being proposed in the Glenkens.

Italian firm Falck Renewables Wind and Coriollis Energy, who have an office in Glasgow, are working on proposals for a 15 turbine scheme near Corsock.

Called Mochrum Fell, the 137m turbines would be capable of generating as much as 45 megawatts of electricity if the proposals are given the go ahead.

Coriolis Energy’s Lynne Sweeney said: “We are undertaking a feasibility study for a windfarm on forestry land around Mochrum Fell, south west of Corsock and north east of Parton. We’re still at an early stage but estimate the project could include around 15 turbines.

“We have submitted what is known as a scoping request to Dumfries and Galloway Council so they can gather responses from various consultees. This allows us to decide what needs to be included in the environmental impact assessment.

“We will undertake pre-application consultation with the community once our studies are further advanced. This is expected in May of next year with a potential planning application in October, 2013.”

The scoping report shows the development would be just 3km from the proposed Blackcraig windfarm and is also close to Burcote Wind’s proposals for 24 turbines at Benshinnie near Parton.

Keith Mycock, of pressure group Turbine Watch 312, said: “This is an example of the current trend for enlarging previous applications or filling in the gaps between existing or proposed windfarms. The result will be vast blocks of turbines covering many square miles of Dumfries and Galloway.

“Recent applications in the west of the county could result in 550 large turbines in a five by 24km band between Ballantrae and Barhill in South Ayrshire and Glenluce to the south.”

He added: “The rate of applications is increasing considerably as the developers move like an express train through Dumfries and Galloway. You can expect further in-fill and expansion into new areas of the Stewartry.

“As the hills become full the lower more populated areas are the next target from voracious wind farm developers. I am afraid Dumfries and Galloway will be changed forever and not for the better.”
