Hanover wind turbine will take a little longer

Hanover will have to wait a little longer on its wind turbine after a test rotation of the blades revealed a few problems.

“The pressure switch at the tip end of the blades has been replaced,” said Victor Diniak, director of the Department of Public Works. “Part of the control system which regulates the quality of the power [needed to be replaced as well and the part] arrived today (Dec. 3).”

With the last of the problematic components either replaced or soon to be replaced, the long awaited turbine could be up and running soon.

Selectmen chairman John Barry was concerned if the town would be offered any kind of warranty by the builders given the issues the town has already dealt with.

“I think we’ve been an agreeable customer through all these hiccups,” he said. “I’d like to think there could be an extended warranty.”

Diniak noted the unusual nature of the project in general. He said the turbine had been constructed in India, tested, disassembled and sent to Hanover.

“It is a complicated process, one of the hardest projects I’ve been a part of,” Diniak said. “But we can certainly pursue [the warranty].”

Selectman Joseph Salvucci was concerned given the custom nature of the design of the turbine and the fact it came from India. If something broke, it may be hard to replace, he said. However, Diniak said part replacement, save for a few components wouldn’t be hard to find.

“There are not custom manufactured parts,” he said.

For now, the town is forced to wait a little longer, although it appears the project could soon be concluded.
