Argument against turbines is a simple safety matter

I’m one of those “middle-class boobies” campaigning against Cape Wind whom Rich Latimer criticizes (“The real ‘boondoggle’ is the moneyed alliance,” Letters, Nov. 30).

Mr. Latimer attempts to blame the moneyed alliance for the continued debacle. To blame those having what we would otherwise want is easy. If Mr. Latimer, being an attorney, had done research before deflecting with such a thin argument, he would find a similar case struck down by the court because of aviation safety (Clark County Nevada v. Federal Aviation Administration). From the case summary: “In light of the record evidence and the lack of any coherent explanation countering the concerns about radar interference, the FAA’s determinations do not satisfy the reasoned decision making requirement.”

Money has nothing to do with the viability of the Cape Wind proposal. Rather, it rests in the court of public safety. It’s simply not safe to place the flying public near the second busiest airport in New England (Nantucket) in harm’s way. It’s a no-brainer.
