Volatile wind causes Fairhaven sound study delay

FAIRHAVEN – Variable winds are causing a delay in the completion of the Department of Environmental Protection’s noise study of Fairhaven’s two wind turbines.

DEP spokesman Edmund Coletta said the department had hoped to have the study finished by December but “The weather hasn’t been cooperating.”

Fairhaven’s Board of Health requested in July that the DEP test whether the town’s turbines are in violation of state noise regulations. If the turbines are found to be more than 10 decibels louder than ambient noise, they will be in violation of Massachusetts law.

Coletta said the state still needs to collect sound data for northeast winds. “We haven’t had those winds without rain in weeks,” he said.

He would not provide a time frame for when the testing would be complete or when the results of the study would be made public, saying “It really just depends on cooperation from the wind.”
