Approval given for 72m-high turbine by lake at Rexon Cross

A planning inspector has approved an application for a 72m turbine to be erected above a popular lake.

Torridge District Council refused the application from Aspire Planning Ltd in June for the turbine at Rexon Cross near Broadwoodwidger.

The turbine will be near to Roadford Lake and 9km from Dartmoor National Park.

Aspire Planning Ltd has confirmed that now permission has been granted, construction was due to start in the middle of next year and that a community fund of £5,000 per year from the turbine would be set up for those living locally to benefit.

The turbine will be decommissioned and removed after 20 years.

South West Water, which runs Roadford Lake, had concerns when the application was first submitted, about the adverse effect the turbine would have on a proposed holiday village they plan to build near the lake.

However, the inspector believed the turbine would not have an adverse effect.

The decision was based on the fact there are already three turbines operational 1km from Tamar Lakes, also run by South West Water, which have had no adverse effect on tourism.

Councillor Rosemary Lock, chairman of the plans committee, which turned down the application, said: “The inspector made his own independent assessment and decision.”
