Ipswich’s second wind turbine coming to town, in pieces

The crane is on site, ready to erect the tower for the second wind turbine at 180 Town Farm Road.

D&C Construction of Rockland, the turbine’s owner, is trying to get it operational by the end of the year, Ipswich Utility Director Tim Henry said.

One of the three tower sections is on site as well as the turbine’s blades, Henry said. The two other tower sections will be coming later this week.

“The department is finding out about the deliveries as they come through town,” Henry said. “It doesn’t get advanced notice.”

Construction is “weather dependent,” Henry said. “If there are high winds then construction ceases.”

The 262-foot-tall turbine is a Hyundai HQ20 MV, imported from Korea. It will be erected near Wind Turbine I on town-owned property. The electricity generated will be sold to the Ipswich Electric Light Department.

According to the purchase power agreement, D&C will sell electricity to the town for $116 per megawatt hour or 11.6 cents a kilowatt-hour for the next 10 years. For the second 10 years, it will charge $70 a megawatt hour, or 7 cents a kilowatt-hour. That averages to 9.3 cents a kilowatt-hour, which is less than the 10.3 cents per kilowatt-hour Turbine I now costs.

The turbine is expected to provide about 4 percent of the town’s power needs.

The department is asking people not to go to the site, Henry said.
