Society sounds alarm over wind turbine developments

The Southern Reporter | 22 November 2012 | www.thesouthernreporter.co.uk

Berwickshire Civic Society is appealing to Scottish Borders Council to protect the region’s historic landmarks and landscapes against harmful wind turbine developments.

The society agreed at its AGM earlier this month that the recent turbine application at Hume Castle was symptomatic of the threat to the Berwickshire environment. This is the second time that this iconic landmark has been threatened by turbine developments and the society has appealed to members to lodge individual objections.

The society is urging local politicians and planning officers to continue with their courageous and independent stance on wind farms.

In Berwickshire alone there are currently 273 wind turbines either consented or operational, with a further 187 being applied for or currently being appealed. These figures do not include further developments in the pipeline and it has emerged in recent days that there are planning permissions in for two 80-metre metrological masts at Fallaknowe Farm on Coldingham Moor, opposite Drone Hill, and another alongside the A1 at Cocksburnpath at Bowshiel Farm.

Anyone interested in sustaining the culture and environment of Berwickshire who would like to become a member of Berwickshire Civic Society please contact Judy Torrance on enquiries@berwickshirecivicsociety.com.
