Bentleyville to regulate windmills and turbines

BENTLEYVILLE – In an effort to preserve the current infrastructure and feel of the village, Bentleyville is planning to further define height and location regulations for windmills and wind turbines.

Recently, members of the Planning and Zoning Task Force surveyed ordinances in other municipalities and drafted a proposal for the Planning and Zoning Committee regarding these structures.

The village is in the process of deciding what might be an acceptable limit in terms of height of a windmill or wind turbine.

Assistant Law Director Ann Oakar said the village already has rules in place regarding accessory structures, which would serve as ruling legislation for windmills and wind turbines.

For several years, the village has combed through its ordinances, making sure they are current and up-to-date. Further defining the village’s code to include height, size and location regulations for windmills and wind turbines is part of this effort to update ordinances.

Oakar said the village has surveyed legislation in villages and cities similarly situated to Bentleyville and has discovered these structures are not highly regulated in many parts of the U.S. Most legislation relates to larger structures, she said.

Oakar stated new definitions will not look to promote or limit windmills and wind turbines, but instead, additional language will be added to help maintain the current infrastructure and feel of Bentleyville.
