New wind farm proposed for county

OSBORN – First Wind, the developer of the recently completed Bull Hill wind energy project in eastern Hancock County, is eyeing a new project in the same area.

If the project goes forward as planned, it would nearly double the number of wind turbines in the county.

The Bull Hill project is located in Township 16 and has 19 turbines. First Wind now wants to add an additional 17 to 18 turbines to the north and east of Bull Hill, five of them in Township 16 and 12 to 13 turbines in adjacent Township 22.

First Wind Project Manager Dave Fowler outlined the proposal at a special town meeting in Osborn Thursday night.

The purpose of the meeting was to see if residents wanted to enter into a “community benefits agreement” with First Wind – essentially, to receive an annual check from the company as compensation for the turbines being located nearby.
