During an open house held Monday, residents of a Tuscola County community protested an upcoming wind energy project.

Invenergy LLC, based in Chicago, is planning to build 62 wind turbines in Denmark and Blumfield Townships. They held the open house at the Richville Legion Hall to answer questions from the public regarding the project.

Mark Burkitt, with Citizens for Informed Decisions of Denmark Township, arranged the protest to correspond with the open house. He is hoping the turbines, scheduled to be up and running by the end of 2014, won’t be constructed. According to Burkitt, around 40 people are affiliated with his group and around a dozen of them showed up during the morning protest.

“We’re very concerned about the health, safety, and welfare of our residents,” Burkitt said, “and the closer the wind turbines are to our property and businesses, the greater the concern.”

Information has not been provided by Invenergy, regarding the exact locations of each turbines, but land agreements have been put into place for approximately 11,000 acres of land between Denmark and Blumfield Townships, according to a brochure provided by the company.

Invenergy’s Vice President of Development Kevin Parzyck says the company is looking forward to a long and successful relationship with the Tuscola County community.

“As we create new sources of clean, homegrown energy, we’re proud to invest in the economic growth of our host communities through job creation, annual tax revenue, payments to landowners, and increased commerce for local businesses and services,” Parzyck said in the statement.

The Reese Wind Energy Project will be the second Michigan wind farm operated by the company, with one already up and running in Gratiot County.
