Opponents react to denial of wind project on Passadumkeag Mountain

The opponents of a proposed wind farm on Passadumkeag Mountain are pleased that state officials have denied the project a permit.

The firm ‘Quantum Utility Generation LLC’ out of Texas wanted to build 14 turbines on the mountain, which is near Greenbush. The Maine Department of Environmental Protection, which now overseas the approval of all proposed wind sites for the state, denied a permit application for the project.

Offcicials say they rejected Quantum’s application because it felt the project would mar the views in the area, which is a conclusion critics say they agree with.

“We’ve been reminded in recent years about Maine’s quality of place and how irreplaceable it is and how we need to protect that,” said Elizabeth Johns, who is with the group ‘Friends of Passadumkeag Mountain,’ “and I think the DEP recognized that and I think they made the right decision this time.”

Calls to Quantum Utility were not returned on Tuesday. Officials with the Maine D.E.P. say the company does have 30 days to file an appeal.
