BP Wind holds open house in Cape Vincent

The Cape Vincent community got a look at the latest plans for a controversial proposed wind farm on Saturday.

BP Wind Energy held an open house, as one step in the process to get the state to approve its plan to put 124 industrial wind turbines in the town.

In September, BP submitted paperwork to New York State under a new law: Article X of the 2011 NY Power Act. The approach gives the state more power and local communities less in deciding if a wind project happens.

BP says it’s looking for feedback from community members, and it’s likely they’ll get a lot, because the wind project has been very controversial in Cape Vincent.

“The open house helps us get the word out about the project, but also allows us to be in listening mode, what it is we’re proposing, hearing back feedback on that,” said BP Wind Energy’s Richard Chandler.

“People can provide feedback through numerous channels, including handing us comment sheets that we have available here at the open house,” Chandler explained.

“It goes contrary to what you would want in a community like Cape Vincent, which is a residential community and a resort community,” said Cape Vincent Planning Board member Bob Brown.

The proposed wind farm would be built on 20,000 acres of private land.
