Wind energy protest planned for Monday

RICHVILLE – Green energy company Invenergy is hosting an open house from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the Richville Legion Hall, 9890 Sanilac Road in Richville, and a group of citizens from Denmark Township intend to protest at the beginning of the event.

Invenergy develops wind, solar and natural gas power generation facilities in North America and Europe. The company’s website lists the wind farm in Gratiot County near Breckenridge as one of its projects, and Invenergy invites local residents to meet its staff Monday in Richville to discuss the Reese Wind Energy Project.

Meanwhile, Citizens for Informed Decisions of Denmark Township (CIDDT) plans to assemble outside the building to express its opposition to the proposed wind farm.

“Our biggest frustration and concern is the lack of information that’s made available to the public,” CIDDT spokesman Mark Burkitt said in a statement. “Wind energy involves big changes, and all the people need to have access to information regarding quantity, size, placement, etc. within the township. Trying to make informed decisions is very difficult when confidentiality clauses, or gag orders, prevent both the landowner and the wind energy company from discussing the details.

“Our residents are concerned about potential health, safety and welfare issues when wind turbines are located too close to homes and businesses. We believe a large-scale industrial wind facility is not a good fit in our township because of the greater population density and other factors that distinguish us from other townships.”

Burkitt said residents’ concern also include the impact of wind turbines on property values as well as the way in which wind farms are taxed. A detailed account of CIDDT may be found on the group’s website, www.CIDDT.org.
