State Environmental Regulators have rejected a proposal from a Texas based company to put wind turbines on Passadumkeag Mountain. Quantum Utility Generation, LLC wanted to put 14 wind turbines on the mountaintop, which is located in Grand Falls Township not far from Greenbush. DEP Commissioner Patricia Aho rejected the application because she said the project had an adverse impact on scenic views, specifically from Saponac Pond, considered a scenic resource of state and national significance. A group opposed to the project called Passadumkeag Mountain Friends applauded Commissioner Aho’s ruling saying benefits the project might have brought to Maine would have been more than offset by harms to the area’s ecosystem and economy. The applicant may now appeal the department’s decision within 30 days to either the Board of Environmental Protection or to Superior Court.
