St. Croix County adopts long term plan

St. Croix County has adopted a strategic plan to run through 2035 capping a long arduous path that began in 2008.

The strategic plan is a county document of background and policy, said Supervisor Agnes Ring who introduced the measure at the board’s regular meeting Monday, Nov. 5.

“This work goes back to 2008 and has been considered by three different boards,” she said. “Our regulatory policies were guided by this plan.”

Members of the public and the board expressed concerns about a provision that provides for wind generation for private use in the 400-page document that could open the door for utility wind development – a particular concern for residents of the Town of Forest.

During a public hearing, Ellen Ard of New Richmond said, “The wind is not stable enough in St. Croix County to support utility wind power.”

The supervisors approved the comprehensive plan by a 15-3 margin. Tim Hood, Chris Kilber and Bill Peavey were opposed. An ordinance adopting the plan passed by an identical 15-3 margin.

District 9 Supervisor Tom Hawksford was absent due to a business trip.
