San Bernardino County supervisors vote to wind turbine regulations

SAN BERNARDINO – The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday opened the door to allowing greater flexibility in the design and use of wind turbines in San Bernardino County.

Supervisors advanced a proposed amendment to revise regulations of small wind-energy systems.

Retired county Planning Director James Squires presented the proposed code changes to the board, noting that issues of energy systems in Oak Hills are “particularly sensitive to the revisions.”

The amendment would loosen regulations on the number of wind-energy units on a parcel of land; allow multiple units on one parcel; and modify permit requirements.

The proposed ordinance was continued to Nov. 27 for adoption as recommended by the Planning Commission, said Board Chairwoman Josie Gonzalez.

Supervisors paid tribute to the accomplishments of outgoing 1st District Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt, who represented the High Desert for about six years.

“I was surprised and touched by the presentation,” Mitzelfelt said.

A video presentation and comments from the public marked the farewell tribute.

San Bernardino Mayor Pat Morris was among those who credited Mitzelfelt for his work with the Local Agency Formation Commission, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Mojave Desert Air Quality Management District, Children’s Fund, Apple Valley School District and other agencies.
