Greens count on Maine Senate winner for climate-change advocacy

Green groups say Maine Senate winner Angus King (I) will be an ally when he gets to Washington, D.C.

King, a former Maine governor, earned praise – not to mention supportive ads – from environmentalists for his record on supporting investment in renewable energy.

Gene Karpinski, president of the League of Conservation Voters, said King would be an advocate for tackling climate change.

“Angus King’s victory tonight has shown that the politics of climate change are shifting all across the country. We look forward to working with Sen.-elect King to confront the climate crisis and move America toward a clean energy future,” Karpinski said.

King is the projected winner of the race to replace retiring Maine Sen. Olympia Snowe (R). He weathered National Republican Senatorial Committee attacks over his work in the wind industry en route to winning the seat.

He is expected to caucus with Democrats. The Hill’s Alexandra Jaffe has more on that race here.
