A ripple for Colebrook in distant State House race: the Zupkus factor

Credit:  Litchfield County Times | November 06, 2012 | www.countytimes.com ~~

HARTFORD–Republican Lezlye Zupkus knocked out Democrat Rep. Vicki Orsini Nardello in the 89th House District.

Nardello’s loss is significant for Democrats because she co-chairs the Energy and Technology committee and has been a member of the house since 1995. In 2010 she won 54 percent of the vote. Citizen’s News, a publication of the Waterbury Republican-American, reports that Zupkus’ margin of victory was 277 votes in the district that serves Bethany, Cheshire, and Prospect.

The victory also has resonance in Colebrook, the tiny Litchfield County towns where two related wind power projects were cleared to move forward, once again, when a court appeal of Connecticut Siting Council approvals were dismissed. The wind farms are proposed by a West Hartford-based company, BNE Energy, whose president and CEO is Greg Zupkus, the husband of Lezlye Zupkus.

Susan Bigelow and Douglas P. Clement contributed to this report.
