Job losses not ruled out by turbine company

Future ob losses have not been ruled out at wind turbine manufacturer Vestas.

The company, which employs around 200 people on the Isle of Wight at its research and development centre in Stag Lane, is undergoing a major international restructure and reducing its workforce to match expected tougher conditions next year.

Rob Sauven, managing director of Vestas Technology, told the County Press this week: “I am pleased to say that the reductions to date in Vestas Technology UK Ltd have been minimal, but we are also aware that we are operating in a very tough climate and future reductions cannot be ruled out.”

It was anticipated that by the time the new research and development centre opened in 2011 the Island’s workforce would have grown to 200 and then to 400 over the following years.

Mr Sauven added: “We always have leavers and joiners as the business needs change but our net figure is still 200.”

The issue of wind energy came to a head today (Wednesday), after energy minister John Hayes said there would be a review of the impact of onshore wind turbines on local communities.

During today’s Prime Minister’s question time David Cameron said there had been no change on the government’s wind energy policy.
