Clampdown on claims by wind farms

Wind farm developers have been banned from making claims about how much power they produce.

The Advertising Standards Authority has forced a Scottish firm to remove information from its website which claims a proposed 23-turbine wind farm will create energy for 38,000 homes.

It ruled the claim by Edinburgh-based Druim Ba Sustainable Energy was ‘misleading’ as it is based on wind speeds which cannot accurately be predicted until the wind farm is built.

Yesterday’s ruling is a significant blow for the renewables industry as it will no longer be able to present such predictions as fact.

The proposed Druim Ba wind farm will overlook Loch Ness. It was rejected by Highland Council due to the feared environmental impact – but is still being considered by the Scottish Government. If given the go-ahead, the 90ft turbines in Blairmore Forest will be the biggest in Scotland.

Druim Ba last night declined to comment.
