Impact of renewables on energy rivals uncertain: Wynn

Subsidised renewable energy cuts peak power prices, but is also unreliable, and in most countries the cost of balancing its intermittency is borne by dispatchable (available on demand) fossil fuel and nuclear power. Dispatchable power providers are pressing claims for subsidies to provide this backup, which would not only keep the lights on but also stop power prices spiking out of control every time they have to step in when wind or solar fails, as can be the case. Councils consider new planning rules to combat growth of wind farms

Councils in the West Midlands could introduce ‘no wind farm zones’ in an alliance which aims to use planning guidelines to prevent the widespread growth of turbines. Officials, worried that some of the most beautiful countryside in the region could be ruined by the growth of the energy generators, have decided to try to keep them away from homes. By banning developments within 2km of houses, opponents of wind farms believe their widespread use would be rendered almost impossible. It . . . Complete story »

TVs on blink as turbine turns

A new giant wind turbine has started turning – and left some Lancaster residents without TV reception. One Haydock Road resident, who did not wish to be named, went out and bought a brand new television before realising that Lancaster University’s 100m turbine at Hazelrigg east of the M6 was causing the problem. She said: “We had no indication that this was going to happen. “We couldn’t get our TV reception to work so we went out and bought a . . . Complete story »

WindMade struggles to attract members

A consumer standard designed to boost investment in wind has had limited take-up, even within the wind industry. So far, only one of the founding members has achieved accreditation. WindMade was launched in January 2011 by manufacturer Vestas and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC). It was a bold ambition of creating a Fairtrade-style consumer standard based on companies sourcing their energy from wind, which would also give brands a solid platform to promote their renewable policies. Since WindMade launched . . . Complete story »
