Eglingham residents oppose met mast plan

Plans to put up an 80m tall wind measuring mast on farmland near Eglingham have met with strong opposition from 37 local residents and parish councillors.

PNE Wind UK Ltd want to install the anemometer mast for up to five years on land just north of Beatrice Wood. The data would be used to determine its suitability for wind turbines.

Opponents are particularly concerned about the site’s proximity to the wind farms at Middlemoor and Wandylaw which are currently under construction.

David Jackson, from Eglingham, said: “The Middlemoor wind farm is not more than four kilometres to the east and must have sufficient meteorological data available already.”

James Lunn of Fenrother added: “One only has to walk in the hills around Chillingham Castle to now see the ‘hedgehog’ landscape that met masts, and wind turbines has and is creating.

“The addition of another spine to the county’s back is unacceptable. The visual impact is far greater that the applicant makes out as its cumulative effect is significant.”

However, Northumberland County Council’s planning and environment committee is being recommended to approve the application on Tuesday.

A report to members states: “Despite a high level of objection to the proposed mast it is considered that it would not lead to the level of detriment indicated by objectors. Furthermore, it is not an application for a wind turbine/wind farm.”
