Wind turbine catches fire at Crofton Bluffs wind farm

A turbine caught fire at the Crofton Bluffs wind farm in northeast Nebraska on Wednesday evening.

The fire was put out and no one was injured, according to a statement from the owner, Edison Mission Energy in Nebraska.

Its cause is not known, but Vestas, the wind turbine manufacturer, Edison Mission Energy and an independent third party are investigating, the company said.

Edison Mission Energy and Vestas still was working at week’s end to get the plant, which has 22 wind turbines, back online.

Vestas has reviewed its fleet of identical model turbines, more than 500 in North America, and said all are operating normally.

The V90-1.8 MW turbine is one of its most well-proven turbine models with a long track record of trouble-free service, the company said. Vestas has nearly 50,000 turbines operating globally.

In late 2008, an explosion and fire in a turbine injured three workers during construction of the nearby Elkhorn Ridge wind farm, also owned by Edison Mission Energy.
