PSC mulls raising ‘net metering’ limits

ALBANY – The state Public Service Commission is considering raising the amount of electricity that homeowners and businesses can generate and sell back to the electrical grid.

The concept, called net metering, has gained popularity in the state as more utility customers install solar panels, wind turbines and other alternative energy devices on their property. Through net metering utility customers essentially get paid for any electricity they generate that exceeds what they consume from their utility.

The PSC has limited the amount of net metering in the state to ensure that utilities can adequately handle the additional power coming into their systems.

Earlier this month, the PSC raised the limit for Central Hudson Gas and Electric. As part of that case, the commission said it would review a possible increase for other utilities, including National Grid.
