Online petition against Connemara windfarm plans

October 24, 2012 | www.galwaynews.ie

A Connemara campaign group opposed to windfarm plans in the areas of Derrynea and Lettermuckoo has launched an online petition. The group is opposed to plans by Gaoi an Iarthair Teo to build 13 turbines in the area. It’s the second time the firm attempted the project with its previous application involving 27 turbines rejected by An Bord Pleanala. The online petition is now open to the public on www.connemaraagainstwindfarms.com and in Irish at www.conamarainaghaidhfeirmeachagaoithe.com Local campaigner Mary-Ann Coyne says local residents are very concerned and she is asking the public to support the petition. The plans have not yet been submitted to Galway County Council, but extensive consultations have been taking place on a local level about the windfarm application. Gaoi an Iarthair Teo says if it gets the go-ahead, the 13 wind turbine farm would generate enough electricity for over 30 percent of the housing in Galway. Brian Keville of consultancy firm McCarthy, Keville and O’ Sullivan of has moved to reassure local residents that the project would bring a serious economic boost to Connemara.
