Company to appeal wind farm refusal

Arbroath Herald | 25 October 2012 | www.arbroathherald.co.uk

A firm who were refused planning application to build a seven turbine wind farm between Arbroath and Carnoustie are to appeal the decision.

West Coast Energy had their plans for the scheme turned down by Angus Council in last month.

And now they are asking the Scottish Government to grant planning permission for the development on land near the Hatton Waste Water Treatment Works to the south of the A92 some 3km east of Carnoustie and 2.5km west of Arbroath.

Steve Salt, planning and development director for West Coast Energy said: “We were very disappointed that Angus Council resolved to refuse planning permission for this development on subjective issues relating to local landscape and visual impact.

This application did not attract any objection from statutory consultees and moreover there was a significant volume of support from the local community including both Carnoustie and Arbroath Community Councils.

“This £21 million development will make a significant contribution to the Scottish Government renewable energy targets and Angus Council’s commitment to address climate change and, having regard to the environmental, economic and social benefits of the development, we hope that the case for this proposal will be supported on appeal”.

The proposals offered significant community benefit in the form of a community turbine and prior to the determination of the application, agreement was reached with the local community on the details of the allocation of the funds from the turbine to the three local communities around the site.

In connection with the community benefit proposals, Mr Salt added: “We remain committed to the principal that local communities should share in the financial benefits of locally produced renewable electricity and if planning permission is granted for the development we will be honouring our legal undertakings to the community to deliver these financial benefits”.
