Turbine separation plans made

A proposal to enforce minimum distances between wind turbines and homes has been included in a council development plan, just weeks after the same idea was blocked, writes Ian Smith.

In September, Conservative county councillors tabled a motion seeking to enforce ‘separation distances’ to manage turbine development, with Lib Dem and Labour councillors joining forces to vote against the proposal.

Now, following a suggestion from Coun John Riddle, the idea appears in the latest draft of the council’s core strategy document.

Coun Riddle said: “Across England, councils have demonstrated that setting a separation distance between turbines and homes is an effective tool for managing the impact of wind developments.

“Something similar in Northumberland would give great reassurance to those of us who support renewable energy but do not accept the current free for all by developers putting profits ahead of people. Separation distances are one important way of putting local people first and preserving Northumberland for now and for future generations.”

The council motion calling for separation distances was put by Coun Glen Sanderson, deputy leader of Northumberland Conservatives.
