Town officials seek IDA’s assurance on wind policy

ELLICOTTVILLE – Town of Allegany officials met with members of the Cattaraugus County Industrial Development Agency Tuesday to update the IDA on developments between the town and EverPower, the developer proposing to place a 29-turbine wind farm along the ridge between the Chipmonk and Knapp Creek areas.

Allegany Supervisor John Hare had been scheduled to meet with the IDA members before EverPower filed a lawsuit in state Supreme Court against the town earlier this month. He sought assurances that the IDA, which had agreed to help EverPower finance the project, would not change its wind power policies without agreement by the Allegany Town Board.

“The town has our public word and will not deviate from our policy without the consent” of the town, county and Allegany-Limestone Central School District, Corey Wiktor, IDA executive director, told Mr. Hare and Town Board member James Hitchcock.

Mr. Hare said the six years he’s spent working on wind policy on the town planning board, and more recently on the town board “has been a long, sometimes frustrating, journey. I’m not sure how it will all work out.”

Mr. Hare said the town’s answer to EverPower’s lawsuit will be filed later this week. He declined further comment on the lawsuit.
