Wind farm proposal drops number of Piedmont turbines

In its $500 million wind farm proposal, Apex Wind Energy has reduced the number of wind turbines that would be located inside Piedmont city limits.

After reviewing the setback requirements in a proposed ordinance in front of the Piedmont planning commission and hearing concern from citizens, Apex said it is reducing the number of wind turbines proposed for Piedmont from 26 to 16.

“We have revised the project boundary to conform to the setback requirements that are currently in the draft ordinance before the planning commission,” said Kent Dougherty, a project manager with Apex. “That revision resulted in the loss of 10 turbines from Piedmont.”

A new project map was presented to the city council Monday but the exact placement of wind turbines is not listed. However, Dougherty said the removed turbines were located in southwest Piedmont where many of the residents who spoke against the project at the last planning commission meeting were from.

“We feel we have addressed a lof of the concerns that were raised at the last planning commission meeting,” Dougherty said. “We will be willing to commit to this (new) boundary.”
