Sounding the alarm

The deplorable consequences of Alex Salmond’s obsession with peppering the Scottish landscape with wind turbines are alarming even Visit Scotland, the taxpayer-funded agency for promoting Scottish tourism which is now condemning this environmental scourge.
VisitScotland is opposing a wind farm development in the Borders on the grounds it ‘could have a detrimental effect’. This is particularly significant, not only because VisitScotland is a government agency, but because only six months ago it published a survey claiming that four out of five tourists do not regard wind farms as a problem.
Belatedly, it seems to have realised that means 20 per cent of tourists do object to turbines. The tourism industry is worth £11billion a year to the Scottish economy; its loss would be devastating.
Alex Salmond recently said wind farms ‘enhance our appeal as a country’. VisitScotland’s realistic appraisal further discredits that deluded claim.
