Appeal to overturn refusal of M42 service station turbine

An appeal has been lodged against a decision by North Warwickshire planners to refuse an application for a 200ft wind turbine at the M42 service station near Tamworth.

The application for the turbine at Moto Services off Junction 10, which would be visible from across the town, was rejected by committee members despite an officer recommending approval.

But this week Tamworth Borough Council’s planners – whose views were sought by the neighbouring authority because of the turbine’s close proximity to the borough’s border – were informed that applicants, Seren Energy, have lodged an appeal with the planning inspectorate.

The original proposal generated numerous letters of opposition as well as a petition.

Residents living near the site should have received a letter from North Warwickshire Borough Council notifying them of the appeal, which will be determined under the “written representations” procedure.

The deadline for any comments or objections is November 12.

Seren Energy is hoping to secure permission for a single 200ft (67-metre), 330kw wind turbine at the Dordon site.

It will not provide any electricity for Tamworth homes, but will produce half the power required by the service station.

Tamworth planning board member Steve Claymore was among those against the application saying the turbine “would look awful without any gain for ourselves”.

He joined 60 other complainants who opposed the plans with fears over visual impact, noise and safety.
