EAGLE RIVER – The Keweenaw County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution Wednesday in support of wind energy. The board, at its regular monthly meeting, expressed support for a federal production tax credit.

Although Keweenaw County does not currently engage in wind energy, board members said it is something the county would be interested in pursuing if the tax credit passes.

“We definitely wouldn’t turn down anything that would create employment in this area or would be a benefit to Keweenaw County,” commissioner Del Rajala said. “Off the cuff, yes, we would be interested, but we would have to see the details.”

As of now, the resolution does nothing more than show that Keweenaw County supports wind energy and the passing of the tax credit for it.

The board also discussed and approved a resolution in support of the Manpower job training programs.

“It benefits our communities,” commissioner Randy Eckloff said. “They do training programs for jobs.”

The board also received reports from the sheriff’s department, treasurer and mine inspector.

In other business, the board:

approved the reappointment of Joe Langdon to another three-year term to the U.P. State Fair Authority Board. Langdon held the role from 2009 to 2012.

approved the payment of various county bills.

approved changes to the Communications Facility at the former Calumet Air Force Station.

approved the December millage rates.

scheduled a budget meeting for 6:30 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Keweenaw County Courthouse.

heard the Keweenaw County apportionment.

Commissioners Frank Stubenrauch and Ernest Mooney were not in attendance at the meeting.
