Draft wind energy guidance goes out to consultation

Orkney Islands Council | 17 October 2012 | www.orkney.gov.uk

A consultation begins on Thursday (18th October) on a revised version of wind energy planning guidance from Orkney Islands Council.

The guidance, currently in draft form, would be taken into account by the Council when assessing planning applications.

The guidance follows the same format as the previous version with a set of Development Criteria for people planning to install wind turbines and a Spatial or Mapping Policy indicating areas where there may or may not be constraints on projects of this kind.

Susan Shearer, Senior Planner with OIC’s Development and Marine Planning team, said: “Orkney is renowned for its wind energy resource and this has led to a high level of wind energy applications being considered by the Council in recent times.

“The redrafted guidance provides additional clarification on wind energy development types and the levels of information that must be submitted in support of any application for planning permission in relation to different types of wind turbine.”

The consultation provides an opportunity for members of the public to comment on the draft guidance, which has been drawn up to meet the requirements of national planning policy in Scotland..

The draft Wind Energy Supplementary Guidance is available on the OIC website and paper copies can be viewed at Customer Services at the Council Offices in Kirkwall, at the Stromness Cash Office, Orkney Library in Kirkwall, Stromness Library and the Mobile Library Vans.

The consultation runs from October 18 until November 29, 2012.

A member of the Development and Marine Planning Team will be available throughout this period to discuss the proposed guidance from Monday to Friday each week at Customer Services at the Council Offices in Kirkwall.
