Hundreds deliver loud and large message on wind projects

MONTPELIER, Vt. – They brought signs, drums and their voices Friday in front of the capital building to deliver this message.

“Industrial sized wind projects on our ridgelines must stop!” said a protestor.

While a rally against wind isn’t new in Montpelier, the protests appear to be gaining new supporters.

“It’s moved me so much that I can’t sit back and let it happen,” said Carol Aldrich.

The group of people isn’t just from one part of Vermont; they were bused in from all over.

“We are a group of Vermonters that have seen the impacts of utility size wind in our communities,” said Lukas Snelling.

It wasn’t just the use of noise; the group met went to the offices of the state board that approves wind projects like the one at Lowell Mountain.

They also made Governor Peter Shumlin a large “certificate of public harm,” mocking his support of wind projects and the certificate of public good they receive.

People signed the large message and marched it to Shumlin’s office.

He wasn’t there and didn’t give us a comment, but his opponent, State Senator Randy Brock was.

He wants to see a moratorium on future projects.

And believes rally’s like these will help him convince other lawmakers.

“Well, you’re listening, your listeners and viewers are listening,” said Brock.

But the projects are going forward as are the protests in Montpelier and around the state.

The public service board says right now there are five large scale wind projects in Vermont: 2 completed, 2 underway, and 1 yet to begin.
