ALLEGANY – A request for extension of a special-use permit and site plan approval, as well as a change in a wind turbine model for a proposed wind farm, were denied Monday by the Allegany Planning Board.

During a meeting at the Allegany Senior Center, the board reviewed proposals by Allegany Wind LLC, a subsidiary of EverPower, for an extension of a special-use permit and change in wind turbine models for a proposed 29-wind turbine farm in Chipmonk and Knapp Creek. EverPower had requested that Siemens SWT 113 wind turbines with larger rotors replace their original proposal to use Nordex N117 models.

“A change in turbine models represents a change in conditions since the initial approvals were granted,” said Frank DeFiore, planning board chairman, in reading conditions for the denial.

Later in the meeting, an attorney for EverPower said he was surprised by the planning board’s denial and added that the wind company had been “pushed into a surprising situation.”
