Trump calls for Salmond tactics probe

By Cameron Brooks | The Press and Journal | 12 October 2012 | www.pressandjournal.co.uk

Alex Salmond has been accused of deploying the same tactics he used to seek support for the release of the Lockerbie bomber to persuade organisations to drop their opposition to an offshore windfarm.

Donald Trump, who rejected a Scottish Government request to back the “insane release” of Abdelbaset al Megrahi in 2009, spoke out after Scottish Natural Heritage and the RSPB dropped their opposition to the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre planned for Aberdeen Bay.

The Ministry of Defence and National Air Traffic Services have also withdrawn their objection to the £230million 11-turbine development.

Mr Trump, who says turbines are “ugly and inefficient”, is opposed to the centre because he claims it will negatively impact on his golf resort near Balmedie.

He said Aberdeenshire East MSP Mr Salmond must be investigated to find out how much pressure he had put on agencies to change their opposition to the application.

Referring to the decision to release the only man convicted of blowing up Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie in 1988, Mr Trump said yesterday: “I am sure the same pressure that Salmond put on the Trump Organisation to support the horrible act was also put on the MoD, RSPB, Scottish Natural Heritage, the aviation authorities and others.”

A spokesman for Mr Salmond said Mr Trump’s comments were “becoming ever more ridiculous”.

He added that the soured relationship between the men would have no bearing on consideration of the turbine application.
