First Minister’s energy stance under fire

Claims by the First Minister that windfarms do not have a negative impact on Scotland’s scenery have “staggered” Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser, the convener of the Scottish Parliament’s energy committee said.

to comments Alex Salmond made this week as he unveiled a fund to encourage more investment in renewable energy.

“I think one of Scotland’s attractions is that we are a green country committed to renewable energy,” said Mr Salmond.

Mr Fraser said:

“This is a staggering defence of windfarms, and not one that will be appreciated by communities across the whole of Scotland.

“If imposing, unsightly turbines were such an aesthetic hit with the people of Scotland, why do they attract such widespread opposition?

“And not only do they risk ruining huge swathes of our countryside, but they don’t even work properly. Their energy production is unreliable and intermittent.”

Communities Against Turbines Scotland said of Mr Salmond: “His words are a slap in the face for the Scottish people, who are suffering from wind developers predating on their communities.”

The group added that the public will have the chance to have their say at a protest march which is being held in Per th on October 20, to coincide with the SNP conference in the city.
