Quality problems delay wind turbine blades

Problems at the Indiana company that is manufacturing the blades for the Archbold and Pettisville school district wind turbines are delaying the project.

Steve Switzer, Pettisville superintendent, told school board members at their Monday, Oct. 8 meeting, the Indiana firm is a start-up company.

The company is continuing to have problems.

Many of the blades the company has built have failed inspection due to quality issues.

Three Ohio School districts– Archbold, Pettisville, and Kenston– are part of the Killowatts for Education project, which built 750-kilowatt wind turbines.

The bulk of the funding came from American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, or economic stimulus funds.

Only Kenston has received its blades.

Switzer said the contractor is working with the Indiana firm to get the schools the blades that are specified in the contract.– D. J. Neuenschwander
