Wind turbines in Sandusky County being proposed

FREMONT – Representatives from Nordex, a German-based company specializing in wind turbines, plan on submitting an application to the Sandusky County Commissioners by the end of the year to build nine wind turbines.

Nordex plans on erecting 80 wind turbines – 71 in northeast Seneca county in addition to the nine in southeast Sandusky County – and hopes to have them finished as early as 2014. The turbines will cover 15,000 acres of land and save about $1 million annually, though most of that will benefit Seneca County.

The official Sandusky County proposal should be made at the end of December.

“That’s my plan and I’m definitely shooting toward it,” Nordex Project Developer Laura Caspari said. “But we all know things take longer and things happen.”

Caspari estimated each wind turbine is capable of providing energy to 700 homes – 6,300 total for Sandusky County.

The Nordex wind turbines are in the third year of what Caspari estimates to be a five-year project. Nordex has already surveyed the land and measured wind speeds in the area. The next step is permitting – which should end sometime in this year.

“We’ve got leases from the land, and all that remains is getting the permits from the state for the wind turbines,” she said.

Nordex representatives met with members of the Sandusky County Regional Airport Board to present the project.

“There are no turbines that we install that will be a hazard to the airport,” Caspari said. “I think we’ll be OK with the airport.

The FAA hasn’t had a problem with the turbines.”

As for any migratory birds in the area, Caspari said Nordex has surveyed the area for wildlife and does not anticipate any problems.
