Evangeline wind energy project abandoned

Plans for a wind farm in P.E.I.’s Evangeline region have been nixed after a study showed there is not enough wind.

The V’la l’Bon Co-op was formed to develop a wind farm on the Cannontown Road between Abram-Village and St. Timothy. A tower was placed on a property there to gather wind data and an expert in wind energy hired to analyze the information.

The results showed the area wasn’t as good for wind energy as first thought, and that the profit margin of the project would end up being less than anticipated.

“There is not much we can do if there is not enough wind,” said Angele Arsenault, president of the Baie Acadienne Development Corporation, which was helping V’la l’Bon Co-op with the project.

“We are kind of surprised. We thought there would be enough. So we had no control over that. It would have been a nice project.

Arsenault says the idea of a wind farm in the area has been talked about for several years as a project that would be profitable for landowners, members of the co-op and the community.

Given the poor results on the research, the management committee decided to abandon the project and dissolve the co-op that had been formed to manage it.
