Scituate residents say wind turbine is too loud

Scituate residents say a noisy wind turbine is keeping them awake at night, and they aren’t happy about it.

“We never anticipated it making so much noise,” said Linda Alvarez, Scituate resident. “I hear the sound of a turbine, more like a jet engine going overhead.”

Linda Alvarez and her husband say the noise can sometimes be overwhelming –especially when trying to sleep.

“You can still hear the noise inside your home with the windows closed,” Linda Alvarez said.

The two say they’ve already gone before the Board of Health just this week to air out their concerns. They say they’re not alone in taking up issue with the turbine.

“It’s not just sound, it’s also this flickering when the sun is low, it’s like a strobe in people’s living rooms,” said Alex Alvarez, a Scituate resident.

“My personal view is this is a great project and I’m glad it’s moving forward,” said Rick Murray, town selectman.

Town selectman Rick Murray lives in the same neighborhood – but he doesn’t share the same concerns.

“We’ve had overwhelming support from the town including many in this exact neighborhood,” Murray said.

The turbine just went up in March; the final stage in a six-year program.

“It’s saving the town a lot of money and this money is hard to come by these days,” Murray said.

Murray says every issue raised will be closely looked at.

“We are not dismissing these complaints or taking them lightly at all,” said Murray.

“I’m not against wind energy. Many of us are not against wind energy. We are against placing industrial-sized turbines in residential neighborhoods,” Linda Alvarez said.

Murray says there is no timetable on when a decision will be made.
