Wind farm moratorium makes sense for state

New Richmond News | www.newrichmond-news.com 20 September 2012

The future of St. Croix County is being written in Brown County at this moment.

Prelude Wind LLC is currently seeking land easements for the alleged development of a 165-turbine wind farm in the communities of Morrison, Wrightstown, Holland and Glenmore. These communities are less than 25 miles from Appleton and Green Bay. The communities are much like Forest in that most had no zoning, encompassed a rural setting and hosted longtime residents and new residents looking for the serenity of the country.

Keep in mind that electricity cannot be stored and, unlike hydro, coal or gas, you cannot call the wind farm and demand more power be brought online as the wind will blow when conditions dictate not man.

While green energy is a great development it is better suited for the plains of South Dakota where population density is sparse and the wind is plentiful. The only problem with South Dakota is that there is no infrastructure (transmission lines) in place to carry the electricity. Investment in the infrastructure of the country may be the one investment we can all agree with.

Rather than running against the wind to develop alternative power sources, spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in litigation and facing the possibility that individuals, the environment and land values may be harmed, it does seem prudent that we should stop and take the time to evaluate the logic, safety, cost and efficiency of wind turbines in Wisconsin and other populated areas.

Sen. Frank Lasee, of the First Senate District, has called for a moratorium on wind turbine development in Wisconsin, you can support this call to action by contacting the following and supporting the moratorium. We cannot replace what has been taken by irresponsible wind turbine development, but we can preserve and protect our state. It only takes a moment to safeguard the future.
