Village turbine torture

Three huge new wind turbines are planned for a Cumbrian village that is already fighting others planned in the area.

West Coast Energy wants to put up the turbines on farmland north of Rosley, near Wigton.

They would be 377 feet tall to the blade tip, more than twice the height of Carlisle’s Civic Centre.

A public exhibition will be held at Rosley village hall on Wednesday between 2pm and 8pm when protestors are expected to make their voices heard.

Members of FORCE, Friends of Rural Cumbria’s Environment, will be present for the entire exhibition.

The Carwath Wind Farm is one of a number planned for the countryside surrounding Rosley.

Glasgow firm TGC Renewables wants to build two 154ft-high turbines in a field north of the Welton-Rosley road and west of Ling Lane.

A spokesman for the company addressed the parish council at a public meeting last night. Allerdale Council has already received many objections. Resident Susan Hanley said in her letter: “The local authority and those who are part of the decision-making process need to think long and hard about why Cumbria is being targeted by companies who wish to build these turbines.”

West Coast Energy has yet to make a planning application for Carwath Wind Farm. If built, it has promised to donate 10 per cent of the profits to a community fund, which it estimates would be around £100,000 a year.

The company’s Steve Salt said: “We want to build a purposeful and effective dialogue with the local community in the pre-application process in order that the community view is fully taken into account.

“West Coast Energy is committed to ensuring the economic benefits arising from turbines are spread as widely as possible through society and is working to ensure that local communities benefit from, and have more of a stake in, hosting wind energy projects.”
