Concern at number of wind farms created around town

Council chiefs have been accused of lacking a proper planning policy for wind farms and of allowing large numbers of turbines to be developed on an ‘ad hoc basis’ on moors near Penistone.

The claims about Barnsley Council were made at a meeting of Penistone Town Council by Coun Steve Marsh, who said there were now dozens of small and large turbines around the town.

He likened them to ‘a massive eyesore similar to the pit tips that used to blot the landscape around Barnsley last century’.

Coun Marsh, who used to be a Barnsley councillor, said that he could see 30 turbines from the windows of his pub, the Dog and Partridge, at Flouch.

He said: “Barnsley Council has no planning policy regarding wind farms and as a result these turbines are being developed on an ad hoc basis everywhere around Penistone which people are now calling turbine town.”

Coun Paul Hand-Davis, who is also a Barnsley councillor, said he would raise the concerns with the borough council and ask them to consider developing a master plan for future wind farms.
