Wind blows again on Purdue energy project

One of the county’s proposed wind energy projects is moving forward again despite the looming expiration date of a federal tax credit.
A 100-megawatt energy project to be built on Purdue University-owned farmland and privately owned property now will move forward in phases, Tippecanoe County Commissioner Tom Murtaugh said after a meeting Thursday with Indianapolis-based project leader Performance Services.
“The project is moving forward,” he said. “But not the whole thing at once, as they’d originally planned.”
The company said in April that the project would be delayed into 2013 as it sought a power purchase agreement and financial backers. It was supposed to be up and running by Dec. 31, the expiration of the Production Tax Credit.
“They’re moving forward as if the tax credits will not be renewed,” Murtaugh said. “They’re not relying on them as part of the financial model.”
Talks of the Performance Services private partnership started in 2011. Plans for a Purdue wind park go back to 2005.
