Cochrane High School may rethink wind turbine; Neighbours voice opposition at public meeting

Administrators at Cochrane High School are considering changes to their plans for building a wind turbine on school property.

People who live near the school have lodged a fierce campaign against the project and voiced that opposition at a public meeting Thursday night.

The proposed tower is considered a micro turbine which stands about five stories high.

Neighbours say it would be loud, ugly and potentially dangerous.

Teacher Stephanie Bennett said her group has never faced such opposition.

“It’s given us food for thought,” said Bennett on Thursday.

“I think we have to go through the next steps and really reflect on the voices we heard tonight and make our decisions based on everybody’s voice,” said principal Susan Poole after Thursday night’s meeting.

The school has applied to the province for a permit, but that application could change.
