Enough is enough on windfarms

The message from appalled councillors echoed calls from residents and objectors. So far as windfarms were concerned – enough was enough. And it was decided by an overwhelming majority of Copeland council’s planners that the area had already had more than its share.
Refusing to approve a £17m development of six wind turbines, councillors agreed it would be “utter sacrilege” to allow the intrusion on an elevated area of land between Moresby Parks and Frizington known as Weddicar Rigg.
There having been 662 objections to the plan, this might have been hailed as a victory for people power. But, though a step in the direction of triumph, the fight is not over yet.
Because councillors went against advice from their officers in rejecting the scheme, the proposal – which promises sweeteners of a £50,000 apprentice scheme with Lakes College and £30,000 a year to a community fund – will be resubmitted for further consideration.
Objectors all over the county have encountered exasperating and costly battles with wind energy companies, as they’ve fought long and hard to limit the march of turbines across some of Cumbria’s most treasured spaces.
With councillors on their side of fierce objection to yet more blots on the landscape, protestors will be hoping that they may well be making progress towards a victory for local influence.
